Jolly Phonics

Jolly Phonics is a fun, interactive, multisensory approach to teaching children to read and write.

Why do I think this programme is fabulous?

  • It’s fun. Having fun with your kids or your class makes teaching and learning a delight. Children come into school excited to learn the newest phoneme and they absorb everything, ensuring a great start to school.

  • It’s interactive and multisensory. Children learn best when involved in the learning. More active kids are able to be active and still learn all the basic skills. Lessons are never repetitive and boring!

  • Writing and spelling turns into an exciting adventure. Often writing and spelling are pushed to the side because they are harder and less appealing. This programme provides constant progression and reinforcement and most of all through stimulating and enjoyable activities.

  • It’s systematic. Children are given a solid foundation in the basic skills needed for learning. The programme then builds on previous learning so children can make links, have a greater understand of a complicated language code which leads to fluent and confident readers and writers.

When children have mastered these 5 skills through continuously practising and revising then they will emerge as confident readers and writers.

It is important to understand what these skills are and why they help with reading and writing.

As a Jolly Phonics trainer, I run training and consultation sessions to provide opportunities to explore:

  • The 5 basic Jolly Phonics skills,

  • How phonics works,

  • Progression in phonics,

  • How to enable children not yet blending and segmenting (struggling readers) to begin the process,

  • Supporting you in planning inspiring lessons that help children progress at a fast yet solid pace.

  • Teaching alternative spellings and how to improve spellings throughout the school.

To book a training session or consultation see contact details.

Jolly phonics starts with teaching 42 basic sounds which then progress into alternative spellings (including Grammar and punctuation) with Jolly Grammar. It can be used as a whole school systematic system of teaching reading and writing progressively through each Key Stage starting in the Foundation Stage until Year 6.

When children learn these basic skills, you will be amazed by the results.
