4 Key Skills

These are the 4 main skills children need to develop in order to become fluent and confident readers and writers. Children who struggle in these areas find reading and writing difficult and often struggle to learn the basic skills needed to become fluent.

To help children it is important to identify which of the 4 skills a child struggles with and then play games and work through activities that encourage that specific skill.
Giving children the best start in life.
All children benefit from developing these skills.
Young children should have many opportunities throughout the day to participate in activities that develop these skills.

Below are a few ideas for activities to get you started:
Memory (visual and auditory)
Visual discrimination
Auditory discrimination (sound awareness and phonological awareness)

Speech development

+ 1 Fine and Gross motor development for writing.
